VIKING HAT


This is a pattern for a beanie made to look like a Viking hat.  Please disregard the Giant Yellow Minion that I used as a model so that I could take the picture and send to my co-worker that had requested me to make it.

MATERIALS:
Worsted weight yarn: Gray and white
G crochet hook
Polyester Fiberfill
Tapestry needle

SPECIAL STITCHES:
POPCORN STITCH--*[Yo, insert crochet hook in indicated st, yo, pull lp through, (yo, pull through 2 lps) twice], rep from * 5 times, draw lp from hook, insert hook from front to back hrough top of first st made, place dropped lp on hook and pull though st, ch 1.

HAT BODY:
Rd 1: With gray, 15 dc in magic ring, slip in first dc.  (15)
Rd 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a dc), dc in next dc, 2 dc in next 7 dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next 6 dc, join.  (28)
Rd 3: Ch 2, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) twice, (dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc) 8 times, join.  (38)
Rd 4: Ch 2, (dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc) 4 times, (dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc) 3 times,  (45)
Rd 5: Ch 2, (dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc) around, join.  (54)
Rd 6: Ch 2, (dc in next 8 dc, 2 dc in next dc) around, join.  (60)
Rd 7: Ch 2, dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 30 dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 23 dc join.  (62)

Rd 18: Working in both the back loops of Rd 16 and both loops of Rd 17, ch 1, sc in each dc around, join.  (72)
Finish off.  Weave in end.

TOP RIDGE STRIPE:
Rw 1: With gray, ch 49, dc in third ch from ch, dc in next 46 ch.  (47)
Rw 2: Working in both the top loops of Rw 1 and free loops of foundation ch, ch 2, dc in each dc across.  (47)
Rw 3: Ch 2, (dc in next 11 dc, popcorn st in next dc) 3 times, dc in next 11 dc.  (44 dc, 3 popcorn sts)
Rw 4: Ch 2, dc in each dc across.  (47)
Rw 5: Working in front loops only, ch 2, dc in each dc across.  (47)
Finish off leaving a long tail.  Sew top loops of Rw 5 and back loops of Rw 4 together.  Making sure to keep Rw 3 lines up with center popcorn sts of front and back of hat, sew TOP RIDGE STRIPE to HAT.  If done right, middle popcorn st of Rw 3 should be over beginning magic ring of HAT.

HORNS (MAKE 2):
Rd 1: With white, 6 sc in magic ring.  (6)
Rd 2: sc in each sc around.  (6)
Rd 3: (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around.  (9)
Rd 4: sc in each sc around.  (9)
Rd 5: (sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around.  (12)
Rds 6-9: sc in each sc around.  (12)
Rd 10: sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog, sc in next sc, sc2tog, sc in next sc.  (12)
Rd 11: sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc.  (13)
Rd 12: sc in each sc around.  (13)
Rd 13: sc in next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, slip st in next sc changing to gray.  (14)
Rd 14: Working in front loops only, ch 2 (does not count as a dc), dc in each sc around, slip st in first dc.  (14)
Rd 15: Working in back loops of Rd 13 and top loops of Rd 14, ch 1, sc in each st around, slip st in first sc.  (14)
Finish off leaving a long tail.  Stuff HORNS firmly.  Sew HORNS to HAT.

  1. I'm making this right now, it's very lovely and working up quickly. I thought this was for a child, it is HUGE! I may go back a few rounds and not increase as much. I do love it though! The bobble stitch adds so much detail!

  4. I would like to make this in a child size...two of them. One for a 2 year old and one for a 6 year old. Not sure how to adjust the band over the middle or the horns.
